Gas smell and gas leak: reacting correctly
In short: A gas leak is a serious hazard, since escaping gas can form explosive mixtures and cause severe damage if ignited. Correct, fast action is crucial to minimise risks.
In more detail: Natural gas is artificially given a characteristic smell for better detection, since it is naturally odourless.

In detail
- Ventilate immediately: Open windows and doors wide to dilute and vent escaping gas as quickly as possible.
- No electrical switches: Never operate light switches, doorbells, or other electrical devices, as sparks can ignite the gas mixture.
- No open flames: Smoking, lighters, and candles must be absolutely avoided in the affected area.
- Leave the building: Leave the building quickly but without panic and warn other people.
- Call for help from outside: Dial the emergency number or gas emergency line only once outside the danger area, not inside the building on your phone.
- Main shut-off valve: If safely accessible and known, the gas supply can be shut off at the main shut-off valve.
- Wait for professionals: Only return to the building once cleared by the fire brigade or gas utility (rauchgas-und-co-vergiftung, brandschutz-und-verhalten-im-brandfall).
