Indoor climate and humidity
In short: A good indoor climate has a temperature of about 20 to 22 degrees and a relative humidity of about 40 to 60 percent. Air that is too dry irritates mucous membranes, air that is too humid promotes mould.
In more detail: Warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air (waerme-und-temperatur).
In detail
- Hygrometer: Shows humidity; cheap and practical.
- Too dry in winter: Heated air; drying laundry, plants, water bowls help.
- Too humid: Cooking, showering, drying laundry raise humidity.
- Ventilating: Burst ventilation several times a day for 5 to 10 minutes (richtig-lueften-und-schimmel-vermeiden).
- Bedroom: 16 to 18 degrees often works better (schlafhygiene-besser-schlafen).
- Mould risk: Permanently above 60 percent is critical.
- Humidifiers and dehumidifiers: Only if needed, clean regularly.
- Heating: Keep temperature even (heizkosten-senken-und-richtig-heizen).
