Window screens and mosquito protection
In short: Window screens keep insects out while airing a room without significantly reducing air exchange. Depending on window type and use, different systems work well, from simple adhesive mesh to fixed frames.
In more detail: The fine-mesh fabric lets air circulate freely while reliably keeping out small insects like mosquitoes and fruit flies.
In detail
- Clamp or tension frames: Clamped onto the window without drilling, and well suited for rental apartments where fixed installation isn’t possible.
- Insect screen blinds: Can be rolled up when not in use and are especially unobtrusive in the window view.
- Magnetic curtains for doors: Close automatically again thanks to sewn-in magnets as soon as someone walks through.
- Mesh size: Finer mesh keeps out even very small insects but minimally reduces airflow.
- Cleaning: Occasionally vacuuming or washing the screen removes dust and pollen that would otherwise accumulate.
- Material: Fiberglass mesh is cheap and flexible, while aluminum mesh is more resistant to pet claws.
- Combining with airing: Screens enable brief nighttime airing without insects in the bedroom, especially in summer (raumklima-und-luftfeuchtigkeit).
