Conflict management in everyday life
In short: Conflicts arise when interests or needs clash and can be resolved constructively with the right approach. Avoiding them often worsens conflicts instead of solving them.
In more detail: Conflicts are normal and not automatically negative; what matters is how they are handled.
In detail
- I-messages: Describe your own feelings instead of making accusations, for example “I feel overlooked” instead of “You always ignore me”.
- Active listening: Let the other side finish and summarise what was heard (aktives-zuhoren-lernen).
- Choosing the moment: Address it calmly, not in the heat of an argument.
- Seeking a joint solution: Involve both sides instead of wanting to be right.
- Escalation levels: Conflicts escalate in stages, the earlier you intervene the easier the solution.
- Mediation: For entrenched conflicts a neutral third party can help.
- Setting boundaries: Some conflicts can only be resolved through clear boundaries (konflikte-am-arbeitsplatz-loesen).
