Passport and ID card when travelling
In short: Within the EU a German’s ID card usually suffices; for many other countries you need the passport, sometimes with minimum validity and a visa.
In more detail: Which document applies depends on the destination. The Federal Foreign Office provides information on entry requirements.
In detail
- ID card: Valid in the EU and some other countries (e.g. Switzerland, Norway, Turkey depending on rules).

- Children: Need their own documents. Child passport or ID card for children.
- Copies: Keep photos or copies of documents separate from the originals and back them up digitally.
- Loss: In case of theft inform police and embassy or consulate, apply for replacement papers.
