Visas and entry authorisation
In short: A visa is a state’s permission to enter and stay there. Some countries instead require an electronic travel authorisation (e.g. ESTA for the USA).
In more detail: Whether and which authorisation is needed depends on nationality, destination, purpose of travel and length of stay.
In detail
- Schengen area: Within the Schengen area there are generally no border checks. For third-country nationals a Schengen visa applies.
- Visa-free entry: Many countries allow tourists short stays without a visa, often up to 90 days.
- Electronic authorisation: ESTA (USA), eTA (Canada); ETIAS for entering the Schengen area is planned.
- Applying: In good time, usually online or at an embassy or consulate; mind deadlines and fees.
- Reliable sources: Apply only via official authority sites; fake sites often charge excessive fees.
- Information: Federal Foreign Office and embassies (reisepass-und-personalausweis-auf-reisen).
