Travelling with children

In short: Holidays with children go better when the destination, pace and journey suit the children’s age. Good preparation regarding documents, health and things to do saves a lot of stress.

In more detail: Children need more breaks, familiar routines and time to settle in. Less sightseeing and shorter distances are often the key to a relaxed family holiday.

In detail

  • Identity documents: Babies and children also need their own valid document for travel abroad. Check in good time with the official authorities which documents are required.
  • Travelling with one parent: If a child travels with only one parent or with other adults, a letter of consent from those with parental responsibility may be required. Follow the current rules of the destination country.
  • Health: Before long-haul trips, talk to your paediatrician about vaccinations and precautions. A small first-aid kit for children belongs in the hand luggage.
  • Sun protection: Children’s skin is particularly sensitive. Avoid the midday sun and use clothing, a hat and sunscreen with a high protection factor.
  • On the plane: During take-off and landing, drinking, breastfeeding or a dummy helps to equalise the pressure in the ears.
  • By car: Only carry children in suitable, age-appropriate child seats. Plan regular breaks for moving about, for example every two hours.
  • Things to do: Books, small games, drawing things and snacks make long journeys easier. Screen time can help but should not be the only solution.
  • Accommodation: A holiday flat with a kitchen or a family-friendly hotel makes it easier to keep usual meal and sleep times.
  • Safety: Give small children a note with their parents’ phone number and agree on a meeting point in case you get separated (reiseapotheke-zusammenstellen, reisepass-und-personalausweis-auf-reisen, sonnenschutz-lichtschutzfaktor-und-uv-filter).
