Watering the garden properly
In short: Better to water rarely and thoroughly than a little every day. That way roots grow deep and plants become more drought-resistant.
In more detail: The best time is early morning or late evening when little water evaporates.
In detail
- Water at the base: Not over the leaves; that reduces fungal diseases.
- Amount: About 10 to 20 litres per square metre in one watering in high summer.
- Finger test: Push two finger-widths into the soil. Dry means water.
- Mulching: A layer of mulch keeps the soil moist (mulchen-im-garten).
- Rainwater: Soft and low in lime, kind to plants and drinking water (regenwasser-sammeln-und-nutzen).
- Potted plants: Water more often but avoid waterlogging (empty saucers).
- Lawn: Water rarely but generously.
