Collecting and using rainwater
In short: Rainwater from the roof can be collected in barrels or cisterns and used for the garden, toilet or washing machine. This saves drinking water and fees.
In more detail: Rainwater is soft and low in lime but not suitable for drinking unless treated.
In detail
- Rain barrel: Simple solution for the garden, with a lid against mosquitoes and children, plan an overflow.
- Cistern: Underground store with filter and pump. Can supplement household water.
- Quality: Roof surfaces of tar, copper or zinc can release substances; use it sparingly on vegetables.
- Registration: Cisterns for household use must be reported to the health office and supplier; drinking water and rainwater must not be connected.
- Fees: Many municipalities charge a separate stormwater fee; infiltration can reduce it.
- Climate: Rainwater tanks relieve the sewers in heavy rain (wasserkreislauf).
