Lawn care
In short: A dense lawn comes from correct mowing, occasional feeding, watering in dry spells and scarifying. Cut too short it becomes prone to weeds and drought.
In more detail: Grasses tolerate regular cutting but not too low. A cutting height of about 4 to 5 cm protects the soil.
In detail
- Mowing: Never more than a third of the blade length at once. Weekly in spring and summer.
- Feeding: In spring and early summer with lawn feed, in autumn potassium-rich for winter hardiness.
- Scarifying: Removes moss and thatch, in spring or early autumn on damp soil.
- Overseeding: Repair bare patches with grass seed, keep moist.
- Watering: Rarely and thoroughly (richtig-giessen-im-garten).
- Robotic mower: Do not let it run at night (hedgehogs!) (igel-im-garten-schuetzen).
- Flowering meadow instead of lawn: A blooming meadow helps insects (wildblumenwiese-anlegen).
