Drinking water in an emergency
In short: In an emergency everyone needs about 2 litres of drinking water per day. Supplies, boiling and filters help if supply fails or the water is contaminated.
In more detail: Without water one survives only a few days (trinken-und-fluessigkeitsbedarf).
In detail
- Supply: Store water in bottles or canisters in a cool, dark place.
- Boiling: If germs are suspected boil vigorously for at least 3 to 5 minutes.
- Boil-water notice: Issued by authorities in case of contamination; also brush teeth and wash food with boiled water.
- Filters and tablets: Outdoor filters and disinfection tablets for emergencies.
- Water sources at home: Water heater, cistern (for cleaning only), rainwater only filtered and boiled (regenwasser-sammeln-und-nutzen).
- Saving: Drinking comes before hygiene; flush the toilet with grey water.
- Notes: Only water from harmless sources, take diarrhoea seriously.
- Prevention: Rotate supplies (notvorrat-und-krisenvorsorge).
