When the computer freezes: first aid

In short: If a program stops responding: wait a moment, then end it through the task manager. If that does not help, restart the computer.

In more detail: Often the computer is just working very hard, for example after an update or with too many open programs. One or two minutes of patience is often enough. Only then do you step in.

In Depth

  1. Wait: Click nothing for a minute.
  2. End the program: Ctrl + Shift + Esc opens the task manager → choose the program → “End task”.
  3. Restart: Through the start menu. If nothing responds: hold the power button for about 5 seconds (last resort).
  4. Look for causes: Too little storage? Too many programs? Old hardware? Pending updates?
  5. Mac: Cmd + Option + Esc (“Force Quit”).
  6. Unsaved work: After a crash many programs offer to recover it.
  7. If it keeps happening: Install updates, run a virus scan, get help if needed.
