Browsing the internet for beginners
In short: With a browser (for example Edge, Chrome, Firefox) you open websites. You type an address into the address bar or search for a term.
In more detail: A web address (URL) such as www.example.com leads to a page. Links (usually blue or underlined) open further pages. The arrows at the top go back or forward, the circular arrow reloads.
In Depth
- Address bar: At the top of the browser. Type an address or search term here.
- Tabs: Several pages at once in tabs. New tab: Ctrl + T, close: Ctrl + W.
- Padlock: Shows an encrypted connection (https). Alone it is no proof of trustworthiness.
- Cookie banner: You decide which cookies are allowed. “Only necessary” is usually enough.
- Zoom: Ctrl + mouse wheel or Ctrl + Plus/Minus.
- Private window: Saves no history on this device.
- Home page: Can be set in the settings.
