Choosing a mobile contract and mobile tariffs

In short: A mobile tariff consists of data volume, calls, term and price; whoever knows their needs often saves a lot.

In more detail: For smartphones there are contracts with a term, tariffs cancellable monthly and prepaid cards without a contract. Advertising often puts the device in the foreground, but the real cost factor is the tariff over months and years.

In Depth

Types of tariff

  • Contract with a device: the phone is paid off along with it, often a 24-month term. Convenient, but the device price is seldom cheaper than buying separately.
  • SIM-only contract: tariff only, often cancellable monthly and cheap.
  • Prepaid: top up credit, no base fee, no commitment, costs are controllable.
  • Network operators and brands: Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica (O2) operate the networks; many cheap brands and discounters use them.

What to look for

  • Data volume: how much do you really use? The phone’s settings show the usage. Often 10 to 20 GB suffice, more with much streaming.
  • Network and reception at home and workplace (check the providers’ coverage maps).
  • Speed (4G/5G), throttling after usage.
  • EU roaming: use in the EU has no surcharge; outside, other rules apply.
  • Price after the promotional months and connection fee, minimum term, notice period, automatic renewal.

Costs and traps

Teaser offers often apply only to the first months, after which the price rises. Additional options (insurance, premium SMS, third-party billing) can be blocked. Check the bill for unknown items and object early. Minors need their parents’ consent for contracts. Thanks to the cancellation button, contracts concluded online can also be cancelled online.

Numbers and switching

The number can be taken along (number portability). Switching takes a few days; the new provider organises it. eSIM allows switching by QR code without a plastic card. With a phone contract, as with other contracts, note deadlines in the calendar.
