Cancellation button (§ 312k BGB)
In short: Since 1 July 2022, providers that conclude consumer contracts online must offer a clearly visible button labelled “Cancel contracts here”.
In more detail: The button must be reachable without logging in, lead to a confirmation page and trigger an acknowledgement of receipt with date and time. It applies to ongoing contracts such as subscriptions, memberships and streaming.
In Depth
- The button is labelled “Cancel contracts here” or equivalent so consumers find it quickly.
- The confirmation page only asks for details needed to identify the contract (name, contract, time of cancellation).
- A second button, “Cancel now”, completes the process.
- The provider must acknowledge receipt electronically without delay. If it does not, the consumer can prove they cancelled, for example by screenshot.
- Anyone who does not offer the button risks that consumers may cancel at any time without notice.
