Electric Motors

In short: An electric motor converts electrical energy into rotary motion.

In more detail: It works with magnetic fields: current through coils generates forces on a rotor.

In Depth

Designs

  • DC motor: simple, formerly with brushes (wear out), today often brushless (BLDC).
  • Induction motor: robust, widespread in industry.
  • Permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM): high efficiency, in many electric cars.

Advantages

Efficiency over 90 percent, full torque from standstill, little maintenance. Also used in fans (fans), hard drives and robots (robotics). See electric cars.
