Storm and thunderstorm: correct behaviour
In short: In storms and thunderstorms there is a risk of lightning strikes, falling trees and falling debris. Those who seek shelter in time reduce the risk considerably.
In more detail: Lightning arises from electrical discharge between clouds and earth (donner-und-blitz).
In detail
- 30-30 rule: If thunder follows lightning in less than 30 seconds the storm is close; go outside only 30 minutes after the last thunder.
- Indoors: Buildings or cars offer protection, close windows.
- Outdoors: Avoid open areas, single trees, water and summits; crouch with feet together if no shelter can be reached.
- Not under trees: Not at forest edges either.
- Storm: Secure objects on balcony and terrace, do not stay under trees or scaffolding.
- Car: Drive more slowly in storms, keep distance from trees at the roadside.
- Warnings: Heed weather warnings (wetterwarnungen-und-warn-apps).
- Injured: First aid and emergency call 112 (erste-hilfe-grundlagen, luftdruck-und-wetter).
