Removing stains: home remedies and basic rules
In short: The fresher the stain, the easier it is to remove. What matters are the type of stain and the material of the fabric.
In more detail: Treat protein stains (blood, egg) cold, grease stains warm.
In detail
- Act immediately: Dab instead of rubbing so the stain does not sink in.
- Protein (blood, milk, egg): Cold water; hot water makes protein coagulate.
- Grease and oil: Washing-up liquid or gall soap, then wash warm.
- Red wine: Apply salt or mineral water, wash out.
- Coffee, tea, fruit: Pre-treat with lemon juice or gall soap.
- Grass: With washing-up liquid or methylated spirit.
- Chewing gum: Freeze, then break off.
- Caution: Test on a hidden spot, observe care labels (waesche-pflegesymbole-lesen, waschmaschine-funktionsweise).
