Cleaning windows properly
In short: Streak-free windows result from the right combination of cleaning agent, tool, and wiping technique, not from particularly expensive products. Choosing the right weather also plays a role.
In more detail: Direct sunlight causes cleaning agents to dry too quickly, resulting in unsightly streaks.
In detail
- Right weather: Cloudy, mild days are better suited for window cleaning than hot, sunny days.
- Coarse dirt first: Removing dust and loose dirt dry before wet wiping prevents streaking.
- Cleaning agent: A mixture of water and a bit of vinegar or dish soap is enough for most dirt.
- Squeegee technique: A rubber squeegee in even, overlapping strokes removes liquid without streaks.
- Microfibre cloths: Lint-free microfibre cloths are especially good for final polishing.
- Frames and seals: Window frames and seals should be cleaned regularly too, to prevent mould formation.
- Upper-floor outer panes: For hard-to-reach windows, telescopic poles or professional window cleaners offer safer alternatives to risky leaning out (putzplan-und-reinigungsmittel, flecken-entfernen-hausmittel).
