Filter bubbles and algorithms
In short: Platforms rank content with algorithms that show what we will probably like. As a result we tend to see similar things and rarely contradiction: the filter bubble.
In more detail: The aim of the algorithms is usually to increase time spent.
In detail
- Personalisation: Clicks, likes, dwell time and searches determine the selection.
- Echo chamber: In groups similar opinions reinforce each other.
- Consequences: Distorted worldview, polarisation, easy access to false reports.
- Remedies: Use various sources, newsletters instead of just a feed, deliberately read opposing sites.
- Settings: Chronological view, limit personalisation and advertising profiles.
- Search engines: Search results are personalised too; a private window or alternative search helps.
- Thinking errors: We prefer confirming information (kognitive-verzerrungen).
- Checking: Compare sources (medienkompetenz-und-fake-news-quellen-prüfen).
