Train travel in Europe and Interrail
In short: Europe can be travelled by train in an environmentally friendly way. The Interrail pass allows many countries with one ticket; seat reservations may be required for long-distance trains.
In more detail: The pass is valid for travel days within a period and is available for EU citizens and other countries. Residents of other countries can use the Eurail Global Pass.
In detail
- Reservation: Many long-distance trains (e.g. TGV, AVE, Frecciarossa) require a seat reservation at extra cost.
- Night trains: Save a hotel night; couchette or sleeper.
- Deutsche Bahn: Saver fares, passenger rights for delays from 60 minutes (partial refund), mind train-specific tickets.
- Planning: Connections and tickets together via rail apps; plan generous transfer times.
- Luggage: Train travel usually allows more luggage than flights, but you must be able to carry it alone.
- Environment: Per passenger-kilometre rail causes much less CO₂ than plane or car (klimawandel-grundlagen).
