Step counters and everyday movement
In short: Daily steps are a simple yardstick for everyday movement. Studies show benefits from roughly 4,000 to 8,000 steps a day; 10,000 is a rule of thumb.
In more detail: More movement in daily life lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and early death. What matters is moving regularly, not a magic number.
In detail
- How much: For adults the WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week (ausdauertraining-grundlagen).
- Raise steps: Stairs instead of the lift, short trips on foot, phone calls while walking, a walk after meals.
- Measuring: Smartphones and wristbands count steps, inaccurately but well enough for trends.
- Breaking up sitting: Even briefly standing up every half hour helps (rueckenschmerzen-vorbeugen).
- Privacy: Activity data is health data. Mind permissions and sharing.
