Cycling as training

In short: Cycling is easy on the joints and suitable for endurance, everyday transport and weight control. With the right saddle position and cadence you ride efficiently and without pain.

In more detail: A cadence of about 80 to 100 revolutions per minute relieves the knees compared with slow, forceful pedalling.

In detail

  • Saddle height: At the lowest point the knee should be slightly bent (about 25–35°). Too low strains the knees.
  • Use the gears: Better to pedal lighter and shift more often.
  • Sessions: Beginners ride 30 to 60 minutes easy, later with intervals (hiit-intervalltraining).
  • Safety: Helmet, lights, hand signals and distance from parked cars (fahrradhelm-richtig-waehlen).
  • Maintenance: Check tyre pressure, chain and brakes regularly.
  • Everyday: Short trips by bike often replace the car and the search for parking (pedelec-und-e-bike-klassen).
