Choosing and wearing a bicycle helmet
In short: A good bicycle helmet fits firmly, protects forehead and back of the head and carries a CE mark with the EN 1078 standard. Germany has no helmet obligation, but it is recommended.
In more detail: A helmet cushions the impact by its foam deforming. After a fall it loses that ability and must be replaced.
In detail
- Size: Measure head circumference with a tape. The helmet must not wobble when you shake your head.
- Fit: Wear it level, about two fingers above the eyebrows. The chin strap is snug, one finger still fits underneath.
- Y-straps: The straps should form a Y below the ears.
- Replacement: Straight away after a fall, otherwise after about five years because material ages.
- Visibility: Bright colours or reflectors increase visibility.
