How an induction hob works
In short: An induction hob creates a rapidly alternating magnetic field under the cooktop. In the pan base this induces eddy currents that heat the vessel directly. The plate itself stays cold.
In more detail: This works only with magnetisable cookware, for example iron or stainless steel with a magnetic base.
In detail
- Faster and efficient: About 85 to 90 percent of the energy ends up in the pan, much less with gas.
- Pan test: If a magnet sticks to the pan base, the pan is suitable.
- Safety: Without a pan the zone switches off. The plate warms only from the pan’s residual heat.
- Noises: A soft hum or buzz comes from vibrations of the pan base.
- Pacemakers: Keep your distance and follow the manufacturer’s notes (mikrowelle-funktionsweise, waerme-und-temperatur).
