Pedelec and e-bike: the classes
In short: A pedelec only assists while pedalling up to 25 km/h and is legally a bicycle. Faster e-bikes or those driven by a throttle are mopeds or motor vehicles.
In more detail: In everyday speech all are called “e-bikes”. Legally what counts is motor power, top speed and whether the motor drives without pedalling.
In detail
- Pedelec 25: Motor up to 250 W, assistance up to 25 km/h. No registration, no licence, no helmet obligation.
- Walk assist: Up to 6 km/h without pedalling is allowed and stays in bicycle status.
- S-pedelec: Assistance up to 45 km/h. Needs an insurance plate, an AM licence and a helmet.
- E-bike with throttle: Drives without pedalling, usually a moped requiring a licence.
- Battery: Capacity in watt-hours (Wh) sets the range. Cold and hills shorten it.
