Neck pain and tension

In short: Neck pain usually results from poor posture, lack of movement, or stress reflected in tense neck and shoulder muscles. In most cases it’s harmless and can be relieved with simple self-care measures.

In more detail: Sitting for long periods with the head jutting forward, as happens in front of screens, significantly increases the strain on the neck muscles, since the head effectively weighs more on the spine in that position.

In detail

  • Ergonomic workspace: A screen at eye level and a backrest that supports the upper body significantly relieve the neck.
  • Movement breaks: Standing up regularly and doing brief stretches prevent tension from building up over hours.
  • Applying heat: Heating pads or warm showers loosen tense muscles and promote blood flow.
  • Targeted stretches: Gently tilting and turning the head to the side releases tension without overloading the neck.
  • Managing stress: Chronic stress often leads to unconsciously raised shoulders, which puts extra strain on the neck.
  • Sleep position: A pillow that’s too high or too flat can force the cervical spine into an unfavorable position overnight.
  • Warning signs: Pain radiating into the arm, tingling, or loss of strength should be checked by a doctor (rueckenschmerzen-vorbeugen).
