Mac and Linux compared with Windows for beginners

In short: Windows, macOS and Linux are three operating systems with similar basic ideas: windows, folders, programs. Menus and shortcuts differ in detail.

In more detail: Windows is the most widespread and runs on many devices. macOS only runs on Apple devices. Linux is free and available in many variants (distributions). If you know one, you quickly find your way in the others.

In Depth

  • Windows: Start menu and taskbar, Ctrl shortcuts, huge selection of programs and games.
  • macOS: Dock and menu bar at the top, Cmd instead of Ctrl, Finder instead of Explorer.
  • Linux: Many desktops (for example Ubuntu, Mint), free, good for tech fans and old devices.
  • Smartphones: Android (Google) and iOS (Apple).
  • Programs: Not everything runs everywhere. Check before buying.
  • Files: Folders and files work similarly everywhere.
  • For beginners: Take the system your surroundings use, then you get help more easily.
