Buying a computer: what to look for
In short: For everyday use and school, a current processor, 8–16 GB of memory and an SSD from 256–512 GB are enough. Screen, battery and ports matter too.
In more detail: First think about what you need the computer for: browsing and office, programming, games or video editing. Performance follows from that. More expensive does not automatically mean better.
In Depth
- Processor (CPU): Mid-range is enough for office and school.
- Memory (RAM): 8 GB minimum, 16 GB comfortable.
- Storage: SSD instead of hard disk, at least 256 GB.
- Display: Full HD, anti-glare or matte, good brightness for laptops.
- Battery (laptop): Look up real-world runtime in tests.
- Ports: USB-A/C, HDMI, maybe LAN.
- Used or refurbished: Saves money. Check warranty and battery condition.
- Operating system: Windows, macOS or Linux.
- Warranty and service: Mind the statutory warranty.
