Autostart and background programs: The computer starts too slowly

In short: Many programs start automatically with Windows or macOS and slow the start; in the Task Manager or settings unnecessary autostart entries can be switched off.

In more detail: At boot not only the system loads but also chat programs, updaters, launchers, cloud services and manufacturer tools. Each occupies time, memory and power. A lean autostart speeds up the start and the whole system.

In Depth

Windows

  • Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → tab Startup (Startup apps): column Startup impact (high/medium/low) shows brakes; right-click → Disable.
  • Settings → Apps → Startup.
  • Task Scheduler and services (services.msc) contain further starters; caution, research only the unknown, do not disable system services.
  • Sysinternals Autoruns shows everything that starts automatically (for advanced users).
  • Mind fast startup (hybrid boot) and background updates.

macOS and Linux

  • macOS: System Settings → General → Login Items; background services in the same area.
  • Linux (GNOME/KDE): “Startup Applications” or autostart settings; systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled and systemd-analyze blame show which services cost time at start.

What can go?

Mostly unnecessary: chat/game launchers, cloud clients you rarely use, manufacturer helper tools, updaters (check updates manually then), music/video players, printer tools. Keep: antivirus/Defender, driver services (audio, touchpad), backup software, password manager. Before changes note what you disable so you can revert. After the restart measure start time (Task Manager shows “last BIOS time”).

Other brakes

HDD instead of SSD (biggest brake), too little RAM, full disk, malware/adware, browser extensions, outdated drivers, overheating. Helpful: SSD upgrade, regular restart, updates, virus scan, tidying software. On laptops also check power mode. A background program that constantly generates high CPU load without you doing anything points to errors or malware (for example crypto mining).
