Unit price and price per kilo
In short: The unit price is the price per kilogram, litre or piece. It makes products in different pack sizes comparable.
In more detail: The German price indication ordinance requires retailers to state the unit price next to the selling price, usually per kilogram or litre (per 100 g or 100 ml for small quantities). It shows that a big pack is not always cheaper.
Our context: The product scanner calculates the price per kg or per litre from the typical price and the pack size.
In Depth
- Calculating: price ÷ quantity × reference quantity. €3.19 for 450 g is €7.09 per kg.
- Shrinkflation: The maker shrinks the pack at the same price. The unit price reveals it.
- Promotions: Discounts are only comparable at the same weight.
- Drained weight: For tins with liquid, the drained weight counts, not the filled weight.
