File Explorer
In short: The Explorer (File Explorer) is the Windows program used to view, copy, move and delete folders and files.
In more detail: It shows a folder tree on the left and the contents of the selected folder on the right. It is opened with the key combination Windows key + E. On the Mac the counterpart is called Finder, on Linux depending on the desktop Nautilus, Dolphin and others.
In Depth
- Path: the address bar shows where you are (e.g.
C:\Users\Name\Documents). You can type or copy it. - Quick access: frequently used folders are pinned at the top.
- File extensions: by default Windows hides known extensions. It is safer to show them (View) to spot disguised files such as
invoice.pdf.exe(malware). - Search and sorting: by name, date, type or size.
- Network: network drives of a NAS can be connected and appear like a normal drive.
- Command line: the same works by text, see CMD commands.
- Do not confuse: the “Explorer” in this wiki’s sidebar is a file tree of the articles. Internet Explorer was an earlier browser.
