Packing an emergency backpack correctly
In short: A well-packed emergency backpack, also called a bug-out bag, allows you to leave the house within minutes in a crisis and be self-sufficient for a few days. It should be stored ready to grab in an easily accessible place.
In more detail: Unlike the stationary emergency supply for staying at home, the emergency backpack is specifically designed for quick evacuation.
In detail
- Water and food: At least one to two litres of water and energy-dense, long-lasting food for two to three days should be included.
- Important documents: Copies of IDs, insurance papers, and important contracts belong in the backpack, packed waterproof.
- First aid kit: A compact kit with bandaging material, important medications, and personal long-term medications shouldn’t be missing.
- Lighting and power: A flashlight with spare batteries or a hand-crank lamp, plus a power bank for mobile phones, are essential.
- Clothing and protection: Weatherproof, changeable clothing and an emergency blanket protect against weather exposure during evacuation.
- Cash: A small amount of cash in various denominations is important, since card payments don’t work during a power outage.
- Regular checks: The expiry dates of food and medications, as well as battery condition, should be checked at least once a year (notvorrat-und-krisenvorsorge, stromausfall-vorbereiten).
