VERA and comparative tests
In short: VERA (comparative tests) are standardised tests carried out nationwide in certain year groups to check the performance level of schools. They do not count towards school report grades.
In more detail: VERA 3 takes place in third grade, VERA 8 in eighth grade, each in German and maths.
In detail
- Purpose: Comparability of school performance across federal state borders and quality assurance.
- No exam pressure: Since results are not graded, they are meant to give teachers realistic insights.
- Use by schools: Results help identify support needs in individual classes or subjects.
- Criticism: Some experts criticise the organisational effort relative to the pedagogical benefit.
- Difference from PISA: PISA tests internationally and on a sample basis, VERA nationwide in Germany.
- Parental information: Parents usually receive a brief report on their child’s individual results.
- Preparation: Practice tasks help without intensive cramming being necessary or useful (pruefungsstress-bewaeltigen).
