Reading and understanding texts: the SQ3R method
In short: SQ3R is a proven reading technique for textbook texts: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. It turns passive reading into active learning.
In more detail: The method was developed by Francis P. Robinson in the 1940s.
In detail
- Survey: Skim headings, pictures, introduction and summary.
- Question: Turn headings into questions (“What is …?”).
- Read: Read section by section and look for answers.
- Recite: Repeat or note what you read in your own words.
- Review: Repeat later and consolidate with flashcards (vergessenskurve-und-wiederholen).
- Highlighting: Sparingly, only key statements.
- Pace: Difficult passages slowly, skim familiar ones faster.
- Notes: Bullet points or mind maps (notizen-machen-und-mindmaps).
