Inclusion in school
In short: Inclusion means children with and without disabilities learn together at one school instead of attending separate special schools. The aim is equal participation for all pupils.
In more detail: The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities obliges Germany to enable inclusive education.
In detail
- Joint teaching: Children with different learning prerequisites learn together, often with additional support.
- Special needs support: Additional specialists support in the classroom as needed.
- Individual support plans: Learning goals are adapted to each child’s abilities.
- Accessibility: Concerns building infrastructure as well as teaching materials and communication.
- Challenges: Lack of resources or insufficient teacher training often make implementation difficult.
- Benefits for everyone: Studies show inclusive teaching also gives children without disabilities social skills.
- Support options: Disadvantage compensation supplements inclusive schooling as needed (notenschutz-und-nachteilsausgleich).
