Eliminating odours at home
In short: Stubborn odours often come from moisture, cooking fumes, pets, or poorly ventilated rooms. Masking them with scents usually doesn’t solve the real problem.
In more detail: The most effective odour control tackles the cause, not just the perception.
In detail
- Ventilation: Regular brief airing exchanges stale, odour-laden air for fresh outside air.
- Finding moisture sources: Mould, damp walls, or wet towels are common, often overlooked sources of odour.
- Textiles: Curtains, carpets, and upholstered furniture absorb odours and should be washed or vacuumed regularly.
- Kitchen smells: Cleaning extractor hoods regularly and disposing of food scraps promptly significantly reduces cooking odours.
- Activated charcoal and baking soda: Both bind odours chemically instead of just masking them, and work especially well in the fridge.
- Pet odours: Regularly cleaning litter boxes, cages, or dog beds prevents odour build-up.
- Air purifiers: Devices with HEPA and activated-charcoal filters can additionally help with persistent problems (richtig-lueften-und-schimmel-vermeiden, putzplan-und-reinigungsmittel).
