Terrarium animals: basics
In short: Reptiles, amphibians and some insects need a terrarium with a climate precisely matched to the species. Temperature, humidity and lighting matter more than for most other pets.
In more detail: Each species has its own requirements for temperature gradients, UV light and setup – general blanket statements are rarely helpful.
In detail
- Temperature gradient: Many reptiles need a warmer and a cooler area in the terrarium to regulate their own body temperature.
- UV lighting: Many reptiles need UVB light for vitamin D production and calcium metabolism.
- Humidity: Forest and rainforest dwellers need significantly higher humidity than desert dwellers.
- Setup: Hiding spots reduce stress; the substrate type must match the animal’s natural habitat.
- Feeding: Live food such as insects usually needs to be bred yourself or sourced regularly.
- Permits: Some species are subject to conservation protection or reporting requirements under CITES.
- Life expectancy: Tortoises and some snakes can live much longer than a dog or cat, making keeping them a long-term commitment (aquarium-einrichten-fuer-anfaenger).
