Fuse and RCD: the basics
In short: Circuit breakers (fuses) protect cables from overload and short circuits, the RCD (residual-current device) protects people from dangerous current. Work on the house installation belongs in the hands of a qualified electrician.
In more detail: The fuse box distributes power to circuits, such as kitchen, bathroom and lighting.
In detail
- Fuse trips: Usually overload (too many devices) or a faulty device; unplug devices and switch the breaker back on.
- RCD trips: Fault current, for example from a faulty device or moisture; press the test button regularly.
- Find the faulty device: Unplug all devices, then reconnect one by one.
- Repeated: If the breaker keeps tripping, call a professional.
- Doing it yourself: Only switch breakers on; do not work on cables and distribution boards yourself (danger to life).
- Safe handling: Dry hands, no wet devices at sockets.
- Rented flat: Report installation defects to the landlord.
- Prevention: Do not daisy-chain extension sockets (werkzeug-grundausstattung-fuer-zuhause).
