Installing and caring for parquet flooring

In short: Parquet is a wood floor made of solid or multi-layer wood elements that needs careful installation and regular care to stay beautiful for a long time. Unlike laminate, parquet consists of real wood and can be sanded down multiple times.

In more detail: Before installation, the subfloor must be completely dry, level, and clean, since unevenness shows up directly in the parquet and moisture can warp the wood.

In detail

  • Floating installation: Parquet is usually laid on an impact sound insulation layer without being firmly glued to the subfloor.
  • Glued installation: Solid wood parquet is often glued down across its entire surface, which is especially stable but requires more effort.
  • Expansion gaps: Gaps must be planned at walls and door thresholds, since wood expands and contracts depending on humidity.
  • Surface treatment: Oiled parquet looks more natural and can be touched up in spots, while lacquered parquet is easier to maintain and more resistant.
  • Cleaning: Only wipe with a slightly damp cloth; standing water swells the wood and should be strictly avoided.
  • Sanding: Every few decades, the surface can be sanded down and resealed, making parquet significantly more durable than other flooring.
  • Climate control: Constant humidity between 40 and 60 percent prevents the wood from cracking or warping (laminat-und-vinylboden-verlegen).
