Drilling into walls: choosing the right wall plug
In short: The right wall plug depends on the wall material: concrete and solid brick, hollow brick, plasterboard or aerated concrete need different plugs. A wrong choice leads to pulled-out holes.
In more detail: Drill bit and plug must match in diameter, the screw must match the plug.
In detail
- Check the wall: Tap test (hollow or solid), small test drill.
- Cables: Check beforehand with a cable detector; do not drill above sockets and switches.
- Concrete and solid brick: Nylon expansion plugs (e.g. 6 mm), use hammer function.
- Hollow wall/plasterboard: Cavity or toggle plugs that expand behind the board.
- Aerated concrete: Special plugs for aerated concrete.
- Drilling depth: Slightly longer than the plug, blow out dust; tape on the drill as depth marker.
- Load: Heavy loads (shelves, mirrors) need suitable plugs with load rating.
