Practising an instrument effectively
In short: Good practice is short, concentrated and goal-oriented. Regular small sessions achieve more than rare long ones.
In more detail: What matters is deliberate repetition of difficult passages, not merely playing through.
In detail
- Set a goal: One clear task per session (“bars 5 to 8 without mistakes”).
- Warm up: Begin with easy exercises and scales (tonleitern-dur-und-moll).
- Practise slowly: Difficult passages at half tempo, then increase.
- Metronome: Helps with an even tempo (rhythmus-und-takt).
- Isolate difficult passages: Repeat small sections instead of the whole piece.
- Breaks: Relax briefly after 20 to 30 minutes (zeitmanagement-pomodoro-eisenhower-und-priorisieren).
- Record: Your own recordings reveal mistakes.
- Motivation: Choose pieces that bring joy; note progress (motivation-intrinsisch-und-extrinsisch).
