Growing herbs on the balcony
In short: Many kitchen herbs grow well in pots on the balcony or windowsill. They need sun, free-draining soil and moderate water.
In more detail: Mediterranean herbs such as thyme, rosemary and sage like it sunny and rather dry. Parsley, chives and mint tolerate partial shade and more moisture.
In detail
- Sunny and dry: Rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano, lavender.
- Partial shade and moist: Parsley, chives, mint, chervil.
- Basil: Warm, bright and sheltered from wind. Do not put out below 10 °C.
- Mint: Spreads, so give it its own pot.
- Soil and container: Well-drained herb compost, pot with a hole, empty the saucer after watering.
- Harvest: Cut shoot tips regularly; this encourages branching.
- Overwintering: Protect hardy herbs in pots with fleece, bring tender ones indoors (zimmerpflanzen-pflegen, gewuerze-und-kraeuter-grundlagen).
