Housing benefit (Wohngeld)
In short: Wohngeld is a state subsidy towards housing costs for low-income households that do not receive other benefits such as Bürgergeld. It is paid as a rent subsidy or a burden subsidy.
In more detail: The amount depends on household size, total income and the amount of rent (or burden). Both tenants and owners are entitled.
In detail
- Who can get it: People with low income, pensioners, students in exceptional cases, families and single parents.
- Not at the same time: Wohngeld and Bürgergeld/social assistance generally exclude each other because housing costs are included there.
- Application: At the responsible housing benefit office of the city or district, often also online.
- Documents: Lease, income proofs, registration certificate.
- Calculator: Many states offer online calculators for guidance. The application takes effect from the month of application, so apply in good time.
