Smoke alarm obligation and correct placement

In short: Smoke alarms are mandatory in homes across Germany, at least in bedrooms, children’s rooms and corridors serving as escape routes. State building codes regulate the details.

In more detail: Smoke alarms detect smoke early and warn with a loud tone. Most fire deaths are not caused by flames but by smoke poisoning, often during sleep.

In detail

  • Where to fit: In the middle of the ceiling, at least 50 cm from walls and lamps.
  • Who is responsible: The landlord must install; the tenant usually ensures day-to-day function (varies by state).
  • Maintenance: Press the test button once a month. Replace the battery depending on type. Devices with a built-in ten-year battery are common.
  • Quality: Look for the Q mark and EN 14604 standard.
  • Kitchen and bathroom: Steam or dust can cause false alarms there. Heat detectors are an alternative (verbrennung-und-feuer).
