Setting the fridge correctly and saving power
In short: About 7 °C is enough in the fridge and −18 °C in the freezer. Every degree colder raises power consumption by about six percent.
In more detail: Temperatures that are too high speed up the growth of germs. Too low wastes electricity. A thermometer in the appliance helps with checking.
In detail
- Use the zones: It is coldest at the bottom (meat, fish), warmer at the top (cheese, leftovers), slightly milder in the vegetable drawer.
- Location: Do not place next to a cooker, radiator or in sunlight. Leave enough space at the back for air circulation.
- Defrosting: Ice layers in the freezer raise consumption. Defrost regularly.
- Open the door briefly: Warm air flows in and the appliance must cool again.
- Let warm food cool: Only put it in the fridge at room temperature (lebensmittel-richtig-lagern-kühlschrank-vorrat-und-tiefkühler, stromverbrauch-im-haushalt-senken).
