Priority rules and priority to the right
In short: Whoever has priority may go first. Without signs or traffic lights “priority to the right” applies. Traffic signs and police officers take precedence.
In more detail: Priority is granted, not forced: those who have it must still be attentive.
In detail
- Priority to the right: At junctions without signs the vehicle coming from the right has priority.
- Priority road: Yellow diamond: priority until the end of the diamond marking.
- Give way: Triangle or stop sign: wait or stop.
- Roundabout: With a “give way” sign traffic in the circle has priority.
- Turning: Left-turners must let oncoming traffic pass.
- Zip merging: When a lane ends, merge alternately.
- Pedestrians and cyclists: Observe priority at zebra crossings and when turning.
- Emergency vehicles: Form a lane; blue lights and sirens take priority (verkehrszeichen-und-ihre-bedeutung, unfall-richtig-verhalten).
