Vehicle inspection (TÜV) in Germany
In short: The general inspection (HU, colloquially “TÜV”) regularly checks whether a vehicle is roadworthy and environmentally acceptable. For cars it is due after three years, then every two years.
In more detail: The sticker on the rear number plate shows the month in which the next HU is due. The check is carried out by TÜV, DEKRA or other recognised organisations.
In detail
- What is checked: Brakes, steering, lights, tyres, suspension, frame, emissions and fields of view.
- Defect levels: Minor defects, significant defects (re-inspection required), dangerous defects (take off the road at once), unroadworthy.
- Deadline: Overrunning by more than two months can trigger a fine, which rises after more than four months.
- Preparation: Check lights, tread, fluids, wiper blades and warning vest (pannenhilfe-und-warnweste).
- Emissions test: It is part of the HU and is checked as well.
