Flight delay: compensation under EU law
In short: Under the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation, passengers are entitled to 250, 400 or 600 euros depending on distance for a long delay, cancellation or denied boarding, unless the airline is not responsible due to extraordinary circumstances.
In more detail: The regulation applies to flights departing from an EU airport and to flights into the EU with an EU airline.
In detail
- Distance: Up to 1,500 km: €250. 1,500 to 3,500 km: €400. Above that: €600.
- Delay: A claim exists from three hours’ delay at the destination.
- Extraordinary circumstances: Storms, air traffic control strikes or political unrest exempt the airline. Technical faults usually do not count.
- Care: Regardless of that, there is food, a hotel and transfer for longer waits.
- Deadline: In Germany claims expire after three years. Claim in writing from the airline, then use a conciliation body.
