Winter tyres: obligation and tread depth

In short: Germany has a situational winter tyre obligation: in slippery conditions, snow, ice or black ice, tyres with the Alpine symbol (mountain with snowflake) must be fitted.

In more detail: There is no fixed period. The rule of thumb “from O to O” (October to Easter) helps with planning.

In detail

  • Marking: The Alpine symbol is what counts. Plain M+S is no longer enough for new tyres.
  • Minimum tread: Legally 1.6 mm. For winter tyres experts recommend at least 4 mm.
  • Checking the tread: With a depth gauge or a 1-euro coin (the golden rim is about 3 mm wide).
  • Age: Tyres harden over the years. After roughly six to eight years have them checked. The production date is the four-digit DOT number on the sidewall.
  • Fine: Driving with unsuitable tyres in winter conditions risks a fine and points, more if you cause an obstruction.
